Step 4: Power Supply mod.
An amplifier is as good as it's Power Supply, period. Too often people believe that while using a quality amplifier module, a simple, cheap Power Supply with dito transformer will do fine. WRONG. Especially using Switched mode supplies without any power reserve on board will degrade the sound quality to a chill, harsh sound and the damping factor of the pack will be down the drain as well!. Also take in mind that about all SMPS modules have a spread of high frequency residue signals on their power lines, affecting the sound dramatically as well.
It's similar as feeding an athlete junkfood all day and every day and expect him to perform at best. It doesn't work.
There is written a lot about the so called damping factor of an amplifier. They all write as if the amplifier part takes all the credits for a high damping factor. Wrong, since a power supply at least is responsible for 50% as well.
Customers tell us that while using our amps "they got an extra octave for free". This we mostly achieved by a good quality power supply with quality components located close to the power train. The absence of wiring and the use of wide PCB tracks helps a lot too.
With our modular setup, we ALSO had in mind that a high quality Power Supply module had to be connected like all the rest: without wiring and in shortest possible way. And we succeeded, thanks to some very long header connectors:
A PS-80 on top of a CS-80/VS-20 combination connected by a 2x36 pole goldplated header connector
A suitable transformer is connected to the board, where all four wires of the secondary windings have their own screw contact, so no loose ends after time. The other end of the power supply is connected to the load by the shown header connector, that's all.
A Power supply module like this is available for CS-80, CS-120 and CS-165 setups.
Our CS-40 has to be connected to any kind (please not an SMPS) supply.
The CS-40PS has a linear power supply on board, cpable of delivering around 200W.
